This learn-to-read ladybird title from 1970, is packed full of record breaking achievements that sound quite pedestrian today. The book contains many great illustrations of straining (almost universally white) men, but the best part is the commentary that takes place on the opposite page which neatly coveys to the young reader the white hot excitement of spectator sports; “Three men. Three men run. Three men jump. They run up. They run down. They run and jump.”
My favourite illustration is the one below. “Here come four men” says the text “they like to walk”.
